Volunteer Maritime Safety
and Rescue Organisations

These volunteer and private-enterprise-sponsored organisations are believed to be all those providing marine safety assistance which operate in the Coffs Harbour area.

Information regarding Surf Life Saving Clubs and local council beach patrols is included separately.

The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol
The Royal Volunteer Coastal Patrol operates a small boat marine radio watch at locations around Australia, at some of which it also operates a rescue service. The sphere of operations of the Coffs Harbour Division extends from the overlap with its sister division located at Trial Bay (South West Rocks) in the South to the overlap with the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard base located at the mouth of the Clarence River (Iluka/Yamba) in the North.

Coffs Harbour Base maintains a radio watch on marine frequencies in the MF, HF, VHF (channel 16) and Marine CB (27.88 MHz) bands from 0700 hours to 2200 hours, seven days per week, from its current base at the Yacht Club. Additionally, some members of the Coffs Harbour Division maintain a radio watch from 2200 hours to 0700 hours on Channel 16 and 27.88 MHz from standby bases at their homes to ensure a 24 hours, seven days per week, coverage.

Local and regional vessels which put to sea, whether leaving from moorings or boat ramps, are encouraged to log on with the RVCP on their departure and to log off on their return. Transient vessels (i.e., those on passage up or down the coast) are "handed over" from one base to the next for the length of their voyage.

Many divisions of the RVCP, including the Coffs Harbour Division, operate a Marine Radio Safety Service. Small boat owners are encouraged to complete a form giving details of their vessel (and vehicle, if the vessel is trailered) and contact information. These details are used during emergencies when checking boat ramps and for search and rescue operations.

The RVCP is in the process of relocating its Coffs Harbour base from the Yacht Club to dedicated premises that will give greater radio coverage.

The Northern Region Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter
The Northern Region Westpac Life Saver Rescue Helicopter provides coverage in the Coffs Harbour area from its base at 60 Brunswick Street, Lismore. In emergencies it is advisable to contact the Police or Ambulance Service through the 000 Emergency Telephone Number and allow that Service to organise the Westpac Rescue Helicopter or an appropriate alternative.

Woolgoolga Volunteer Sea Rescue
Woolgoolga Volunteer Sea Rescue conducts a small boat marine radio watch and rescue service from its premises at Beach Street, Woolgoolga.
